As we welcome in the new year for some this is a time of heightened anxiety. The worries from the past year seem to follow us into the next and we often find ourselves worried about what this new year will bring.

Anxiety is something that we all face at some point in our lives. For many people, it can feel like uncontrollable racing thoughts, a tight chest, and feeling low.

Studies show that feelings of anxiety start to come to surface when we are reliving the past, or in fear of the future.

Here are some tips that you can practise when you are in a state of anxiety.

1 - Become more self aware by noticing what is making you anxious. We all have triggers, whether it be a past memory you keep thinking about, or the fear of a future situation, the list goes on. By getting to the root of your anxiety, it can help you to understand the actual issue you are dealing with, this can then help you take the next steps in tackling the situation.

2 - Journaling is another great tool which really helps to declutter your mind and put your thoughts on paper. This gives you a good insight into what you are worried about. Once you have written down your worries, you can then write positive affirmations to overcome each negative thought, this can help you to feel more at peace. A gratitude journal is another great way of lifting your mood, as it forces you to think about all the things you are grateful for, instead of the opposite.

3 - Try a guided meditation or yoga as it can help to bring you a sense of inner peace, and feel more present in the moment instead of living in our minds. Walking in nature has a similar effect and can be very soothing.

4 - Taking deep breaths are very powerful when it comes to feeling anxious. By breathing slower and more deeply from your stomach, you signal your nervous system to calm down.

5 - Sometimes the lack of certain vitamins and minerals can cause you to feel anxious. Getting a blood test can help give you an insight in making sure you are not lacking anything.
